NJ Gas Tax and Pensions

The New Jersey Legislature raised the state motor fuels tax on 1 November 2016.  A week later, voters endorsed a measure to dedicate those gas taxes to transportation projects.  The combination of those events under NJ law makes possible the issuance of $12 billion in Transportation Trust Fund bonds. It was only a matter of time before politicians started scheming to capture some of the billion dollar a year revenue flow from the gas tax increase.  Steve Sweeney has proposed…

Brinson for NJ Governor 2017

Monica Brinson, resident of Hasbrouck Heights, graduate of Centenary College, and a pharmaceutical executive, has thrown her hat into the NJ gubernatorial race. Platform Brinson has made no public statements about her platform. Demcratic Party There is no indication yet that Brinson has secured the support of the Democratic Party. Is Brinson serious? It’s going to take a lot of work to beat Phil Murphy, Goldman Sachs executive who served as the U.S. ambassador to Germany.  Murphy cranked up his…

NJ Ballot Question 2 – Gas tax lockbox

Why are we arguing over New Jersey ballot question 2?  Because we’re not all in possession of the same facts. On 1 November, the New Jersey gas tax increased.  That’s a done deal.  No matter what you are told, we are unlikely to see a rollback.  On 8 November, NJ voters will be asked to vote to change the NJ Constitution to dedicate motor fuel revenue to the Transportation Trust Fund.  That is a different question.  It will not affect…

NJ Gas Tax and Ballot Measure 2

The New Jersey Assembly voted to increase the motor fuel tax by 23 cents.  The governor has signed it.  It’s a done deal, effective 1 November. On 8 November, NJ voters will be asked to vote to change the NJ Constitution to dedicate motor fuel revenue to the Transportation Trust Fund. That is a different question.  It will not affect what you pay at the pump. I don’t want to see the price of gas go up any more than…

New Jersey Gun Arrest. Just change the date and the photo.

Once a week or so, I Google news of “NJ gun arrest.”  Up pops a story from nj.com.  They are like formulaic obituaries.  There are two stories.  The first one is so predictable as to make me think the Star Ledger gives cub reporters a template – mad-libs for the web. Gun arrest story template Police from [Camden, Paterson, Jersey City, or Newark] arrested [insert name here] at [insert time here] in [number] block of [street].  While officers were in…

Oath Keepers

Patriots or domestic terrorists? Scott Garrett, seven-term Republican Congressman from New Jersey’s northernmost congressional district, went to a breakfast with a member of the Oath Keepers, a law enforcement group pledged to uphold the Constitution.  Now he’s in a bitter fight with Democrats who claim he’s associated with a terrorist organization. Garret’s precarious political position stems in great part to the divide between the New Jersey approach to guns and the federal one.  The U.S. Constitution protects gun rights.  The…

Murphy runs for Governor of NJ

Phil Murphy, former Goldman Sachs executive, DNC finance chair, and ambassador to Germany, has announced his candidacy for governor of New Jersey in 2017.  Murphy says he doesn’t owe the insiders anything.  He’s taking a cue from Trump. Murphy’s comment about not being a political insider seems a bit disingenuous.  He was after all part of the Democratic National Committee and served in the Obama administration. Student loans and college tuition Murphy sings from Sanders’ playbook where college tuition and…
